GET OUT OF ITS PATH

If you are experiencing abnormally heavy rain in your area, you would be advised to move to higher ground. If a flash flood warning is given, you should make your way to a safe location until the danger has passed. Should you be unlucky enough to be standing in the path of a flash flood, make every effort to get out of its way. It may look as if it is only a few inches high, but the power and force of the water will knock you off your feet. Flash floods are dangerous, even small localized ones. If you are in a car and not in the path of the floodwater, you should exit and make your way to higher ground. If your car is caught up in the flash flood, you will have little choice other than to stay in your car and hope that it is eventually washed to one side, or trapped in such a position as to allow you to exit.

In late August 2011, Hurricane Irene hit the east coast of the United States; one of the first victims was a young woman from New Jersey who was found dead in her car. She had called the police earlier, after the car had been washed away by the flash flood. “She left her house, went in her car and was swept away,” said New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
